Introduction to Descriptive Statistics
Workshop Details
Workshop Overview
Descriptive statistics are the foundation of all data analysis, but they are often taught as
formulas rather than as tools for thinking and sense-making. This workshop
introduces descriptive statistics as a practical way to understand data, identify
patterns, and communicate insights clearly, especially in program monitoring,
evaluations, and research studies. Using real-world examples from social and
development programs, the session focuses on what each statistic means, when to use
it, and how to interpret it correctly.
Workshop Objectives
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Understand what descriptive statistics are and why they matter in research, M&E, and decision-making.
- Differentiate between types of data (categorical, numerical, discrete, continuous).
- Summarize data meaningfully using measures of central tendency and spread.
- Interpret statistics correctly instead of mechanically reporting numbers.
Who Should Attend
- Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) professionals
- Researchers and research associates
- Program managers and designers
- Students and early-career professionals in the social sector
- Anyone working with surveys, assessments, or program data
