Participatory Research
Workshop Details
Workshop Overview
This session introduces participatory research as a family of approaches involving
varying levels of community involvement across the research process. Core definitions
are outlined, followed by consideration of why it has become an important approach
within contemporary research practice and when such approaches are appropriate in
relation to research aims and contexts.
Participants will examine how participatory research is conducted in practice, including
key stages, roles, and decision points. Foundational considerations such as ethics,
power, and research ownership are addressed, with a focus on how these shape the
design and application of participatory approaches within different research settings.
Workshop Objectives
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Develop an understanding of when, why, and how participatory approaches can add value to research.
- Gain an overview of key concepts and terminology associated with participatory research.
- Critically examine the strengths and challenges of participatory research approaches across the spectrum of participation.
- Reflect on the potential application of participatory approaches to one’s own work or research practice.
